ROBIN HOOD'S HIDEAWAY

On April 15, 2008 we closed on a 1955 Mid-Century Modern home in Merriam, KS that was custom designed by the late Donald R. Hollis of Hollis + Miller Architects. We will be sharing our journey as we update the house to make it our own, while trying to stay as close to the original design as possible.

Half bath is half done, and pendant lights are finally hung!

Our 10" rough in toilet came in last Monday, we picked it up on Tuesday, and installed it on Saturday.  We now need to install the sink.  LD thinks it will be easy, but nothing around here is ever easy.  Wish us luck!

We finally decided on the pendant light shades, and got them hung this weekend.

On Sunday we decided to go to Columbia so that LD could give Katy some rubble time.  We got to meet Kathleen's new German Shepherd, and got invited to dinner by our friend Sherril.  Her roast was delicious!

Master Bedroom Flooring and Vanity

I have been quite busy lately so I have not had a chance to post, but we have had some progress since I last posted.  Our master bathroom vanity was finally installed, which gave LD a chance to finally finish the last of the cork floor in the master bedroom.  She worked like a mad woman last Thursday, staying up until 1 am to try and get the flooring done.  She was determined to have a bed in there before our friends from Little Rock arrived on Friday

The need to sleep kicked in before she got it all done, but it was good enough to move the bed in there.   Thanks to President's Day, she was able to finish her install on Monday.

Bathroom Trouble!

I spent the weekend priming and painting our half bathroom downstairs.  I figure it would be nice to have a second bathroom before our friends come over next weekend.  The toilet rough in did not have a flange, and it took a couple of trips to Home Depot before we purchased the right one.  We were not able to install it however, because we need a hammer drill to secure the flange to the cement floor.  Our old craftsman drill just did not have enough umph!  That was the least of our troubles though.

It turned out that the dual flush water saving toilet we purchased at Sams Club a few months ago is not going to work out for the space.  It requires a 12 inch rough in, and we only have a 10" rough in.  Unless we can find the time to run into Home Depot or Lowes this week (assuming they have a toilet that works for a 10" rough in), it looks like we might have to share one bathroom.  Oh well, it is not much different than what we had to do in our 1 bathroom home.

I am blogging from the local Panera (thank God for free wi-fi), given tha our AT&T DSL is down again!!!  I am seriously going to consider switching to Surewest.  I am sick and tired of AT&T's customer service (or lack thereof).

Stairs Finally Done!

Johnsonite Landing Tile in Sea Breeze with Bamboo Pattern

In an earlier post I blogged about the delivery of our Johnsonite stair treads, and were pretty excited about them being installed.  It was quite a let down when we got back from work to learn that only a few of the stairs had been done due to a mix up in shipment.   We waited five long weeks for the stair treads to be manufactured and shipped, and were not looking forward to another five weeks of waiting.

Morgan wondering if the stairs would ever be covered!

Halfway there

Fortunately, Johnsonite expedited the manufacture and shipment of the remaining stair treads.  They were dropped off by the installers last Monday, and allowed to acclimate to the house for a few days.  The installer came by last week and covered the remaining stairs.   They came out quite nice, and they certainly have the dogs' seal of approval!

Finally done!

We Finally Moved!

After 9 long months of flooring, wallpaper, toilets, draperies, painting, drywall, etc we finally decided that we were tired of living between two houses.  The house is nowhere near done, but we rented a U-haul and moved anyways.

We've been pretty busy, but I have finally found some time for relaxation and fun.  It was amazing how much stress we were under.  Living in the trees has certainly helped our mental and physical well being.

I would have blogged about this earlier, but AT&T took forever to connect our internet and phone!
